The book is divided into 6 sections:

All of the chapters presented below are in PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher. Download it for free here. Then click on a chapter below and take a look!

1. Table of Contents.

2. Chapter 1: “Healthier Yards… Healthier Neighborhoods … Healthier Habitats,” summarizes the national need for healthier landscaping practices, especially issues surrounding water quality and quantity, the introduction of non-native species, and the overuse of common pesticides and herbicides. References to primary sources and peer-reviewed papers are included.

3. Chapter 2 introduces you to people who have made the switch to healthy gardening practices. They show you in words and pictures what they find so satisfying about it. Learn from a master gardener, several birdwatchers, a habitat restorer, a zoo landscape supervisor and others about their success stories.

4. Chapter 3 offers “Simple Steps for the Lively Garden” – an easy-to-follow guide to thinking about, and implementing, improvements to your garden that will save water, reduce pesticide use, attract wildlife – and simultaneously save time and money!

5. Chapter 4, “Make Your Community Healthier,” reminds you that tending your own backyard may not be enough. Because many parks and utilities departments have yet to adopt healthy maintenance practices, this chapter provides tips on advocating in your community to assure healthier habitats.

6. Chapter 5: “Contacts and Resources” lists agencies and organizations, books, websites and such, for your further exploration.
