Counting for Conservation
The Sky Is the Limit...
Birdwatching is among the fastest growing and most popular outdoor activities in America. More than 60 million people consider themselves active bird watchers and millions more feed birds. But have you ever considered birding as a competitive activity? Or as a way to help the birds themselves?
A Way to Help Birds and Other Wildlife
Each year Audubon, America's oldest bird and wildlife conservation
organization, coordinates Birdathon, the world's largest competitive
birdwatching event. Birdathon is the uniquely Audubon way to celebrate
the importance of migratory birds and raise funds for Audubon's
conservation programs. Birdathons raise over $1million annually.
Over 100,000 individual sponsors and 30,000 volunteers participate
in over 300 communities. Event publicity reaches an estimated 35
million people.
How Does Birdathon Work?
Birdathons are held throughout the United States from April to June, with times for local events coinciding with peak bird migration.
Participants meet in groups across the country and scan skies, trees and wetlands to identify as many bird species as possible -- up to 200 in some cases -- in a one-day period.
Participants obtain pledges form sponsors, ranging from 25¢ up to $10 or more for each species spotted.
Birdathon Is Fun for a Good Cause
Birdathon participants spend a great spring day outdoors. The money they raise helps finance local and national Audubon conservation projects and programs. These activities have a common aim: to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.
Birdathon funds have been used to purchase wildlife habitat, to conserve wetlands and ancient forests, and to involve hundreds of thousands of school children in Audubon's education programs.
Who Takes Part in Birdathon?
YOU DO! The Society's members, chapters, Board of Directors, staff and friends in the corporate community are the main participants, but anyone can participate in this birding blitz! Thousands of birders nationwide, serious, casual and first time, take to the fields to count the millions of birds migrating through North America.
