The WatchList is a centerpiece of bird conservation at Audubon. The WatchList harnesses the strength that builds when education and advocacy are built on science. You can help us conserve WatchList species by conducting a Birdathon to support the WatchList conservation program. You'll raise money and awareness, help save species and have fun watching birds!

The WatchList calls attention to birds at risk before they require federal listing, stressing preventative action today over last-minute rescue attempts in the future. Compiled by scientists from Partners in Flight (of which Audubon is a member), the WatchList targets bird species with declining populations, limited ranges, and those facing threats such as habitat loss on their breeding and wintering grounds. Saving species pushed to the edge of extinction is difficult, costly and politically confrontational. In response, the WatchList serves as an early-warning system to wildlife management agencies, NGOs, private landowners, and the public.

Use the WatchList to Raise Awareness & Money

  • Let your sponsors know that you are raising money to save WatchList species.
  • Prior to your Birdathon, ask sponsors to give extra for each WatchList species spotted on your Birdathon.
  • After the "big day," compare your Birdathon check list to the WatchList species below. Indicate in your report to sponsors which WatchList species you saw and how much the sponsors owe.

Explore the WatchList and Birdathon on-line http://www.audubon.org/bird/watch/ and http://www.audubon.org/bird/birdathon/. The WatchList site contains a map showing the WatchList birds in your area.
