In the U.S., one or more of the target migratory waterbird species of conservation concern have been found to occur at approximately 380 identified or recognized Important Bird Areas throughout 35 states, based on analyses of available data in the Important Bird Areas database (See target waterbird species). Eighty-five of these Important Bird Areas are considered high priority sites for the conservation of these Neotropical migrant waterbirds. These sites have been documented to support one or more of the focal waterbird species in significant numbers relative to Global and Continental IBA Criteria and have either been prioritized as or have the potential to be Global or Continental IBAs. These findings are the results of analyses with available data at the time and may not be comprehensive. Additional IBAs are still in the process of being identified, and data are still being compiled.
