350 Puffins Against Global Warming

The 350 Puffins Against Global Warming banner and the actions of participants at the PPVC were both a part of a global 350 event in October 2009, where actions from around the world involving hundreds of thousands of people sent a clear and powerful message to world leaders: The people want climate change legislation now!

On October 24, people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 5,200 events around the world, including a rally in Times Square, people gathered to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis. World leaders will gather in Copenhagen in December 2009 to agree on a new global climate treaty, and the 350 stands for 350 parts per million, the safe level for CO2 in the atmosphere. 350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis - the solutions that science and justice demand. Visit: http://www.350.org/mission for information.

Climate change affects every species, from puffins to people, and since the puffins and other seabirds cannot tell politicians what to do, we must represented their voices in the movement. After the picture below was taken at the PPVC, our group then headed to the Camden 350 event where we displayed our banners, told people about how climate change is related to puffins, and participated in their action event and photo session.

The 350 puffins against global warming action was conceived and championed by Janneke Petersen, a 2009 Project Puffin Education Intern. Janneke is a recent graduate of Bates College. She spent her summer working on Project Puffin seabird nesting islands, leading puffin watching boat tours aboard the Hardy Boat and Captain Fish and greeting visitors to Project Puffin Visitor Center in Rockland.
