Access: Qualified research staff provide their own transport from the mainland by motorized Avon docking at Cundy's Harbor. When all staff are on the island, the Avon stays at the island tied to a mooring buoy. Island staff are responsible for securing their own supplies and groceries as needed when no one is scheduled to arrive from the Audubon base camp in Bremen. Use of personal vehicles is necessary. NAS has fuel accounts at vendors in Brunswick. Accommodations: A large tent accommodates the island supervisor and the research equipment. The "kitchen" boasts a propane camp stove. Volunteers and interns must bring their own tent, sleeping bag and ground pad. The occasional shower may be taken at the Tupper residence in Cundy's Harbor. There is no toilet on the island.
Wildlife: A Common Tern colony with some Roseate Terns predominates. Nearby islands host herons, gulls and cormorants. Occasionally a Great Horned Owl will appear to feed on terns. Study Projects: Monitor a restored tern colony; tern chick feeding study; measure tern productivity and tern chick growth; study the effects of weather on foraging success; daily bird census.
