| HEADQUARTERS FOR MAINE'S
LARGEST NETWORK OF PRIVATELY MANAGED SEABIRD SANCTUARIES:
The Center provides college -age students
and volunteers a unique opportunity to work and live among puffins, terns
and other seabirds. Annually, about 50 volunteers participate in
ongoing management and protection of Maine seabirds. The program
offers instruction regarding specific conservation techniques such as censusing,
monitoring, banding and field observation. The 12 week internship
provides students interested in ecology and conservation with a chance
to live on and study seabirds at six Audubon-managed field stations
which include some of Maine’s most important seabird sanctuaries.
THE AUDUBON ECOLOGY CAMP IN MAINE: The Seabird Center is designed as a vital
component of the Audubon Camp in Maine. It will serve as the office
and gateway for the seasonal residencial camp that began in 1936 on Hog
Island. The Seabird Center will be the public entrance to the 33
acres of mainland owned by Audubon and the entrance to the Hockomock
Nature trail. The Center will have an expanded store featuring
books and gifts appropriate to seabirds and the Audubon Camp on Hog Island.
![]() PARTNERSHIP: The Vision for the Seabird Center includes a mutually
beneficial partnership between National and Maine Audubon that demonstrates
the practical benefits of collaboration. Building the Seabird Center
means building a strong and permanent partnership for Audubon
in Maine.
