& HOG ISLAND ECOLOGY CAMP LOCATIN & DESCRIPTION: National Audubon’s Hockomock Point property comprises 33 acres on the southeast side of Keene Neck in the town on Bremen, Maine. Hog Island, (325 acres), is also owned by Audubon and lies one quarter mile east, across the Hockomock Channel. The mainland property and Hog Island comprise the Todd Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Hockomock Point property is a mix of second growth spruce and fir with mixed oak and large old white pines. Stone walls wind through the woods, evidence of earlier agricultural history. Meadows are maintained for both habitat diversity and to allow views of Muscongus Bay from the buildings set on the 70 foot crest of the property. The property is 10 miles southeast of Damariscotta on the Pemaquid Peninsula. Many of the homes in the area are seasonal residences, though there is a thriving community based on fishing, tourism and economic activity related to the summer vacation season. Many local residents commute from the area to larger towns and value the area for its beautiful environment and low key lifestyle. Nearby population centers include Bath and Camden, approximately 45 minutes drive west and east respectively. The state’s largest city, Portland and capital, Augusta are 1.5 hours south and north respectively.
