Bald Eagle

Distribution

Canada and Alaska to southern United States.

Habitat

Coasts, lakes, rivers in open and forested areas.

Nesting

Massive nest of sticks in tall tree, deeply lined with fine materials. Also on cliffs.

Threats

  • DDT and PCB poisoning caused eggshell thinning, leading drastic declines in numbers since 1940's.

Status and Conservation

Threatened (as listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service). Recent data shows Bald Eagle to have healthy populations; thus it may be time to down-list Bald Eagle from Threatened. After near extinction only two decades ago, populations nationwide are increasing due to federal restrictions on DDT and other pesticide use.
