Broad-tailed Hummingbird

Distribution

Breeds in scattered locations from Wyoming and Idaho south to New Mexico and Arizona. Winters in Mexico.

Habitat

Arid scrubland and woodland, desert riparian.

Nesting

Grass stems covered with leaves and bark bound with spider's silk.

North American Status

Populations are stable or increasing. The Breeding Bird Survey shows about a 1.0% annual population increase between 1966-1996 across the United States.

Status and Conservation

No immediate conservation measures required. Broad-tailed Hummingbirds are killed by colliding with cars and windows, and sometimes electrocuted when perching on electric fences, but no evidence that these factors are having population-level effects.
