Peregrine Falcon

Distribution

Nearly worldwide. U.S. and Canadian populations winter south through California and West Indies to South America.

Habitat

Open habitats including tundra, grasslands, seacoasts, open forests. Also mountains and city skyscrapers.

Nesting

Scrape in debris on cliff or building ledge. Cliff sites used for many years.

Threats

  • DDT and PCB poisoning caused eggshell thinning, leading drastic declines in numbers since 1940's.

Status and Conservation

De-listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in August of 1999. After near extinction only two decades ago, the Peregrine Falcon has made a comeback due to federal restrictions on DDT and other pesticide use, and successful captive breeding programs.
