Distribution

Breeds along Atlantic coast from southern Canada south to North Carolina, in wetlands of northern Great Plains from southern Canadian prairie provinces south to Nebraska, and along isolated portions of the Great Lakes. Winters along coast from North Carolina south to Florida, along Gulf Coast and on isolated spots in Cuba and Mexico.

Habitat

Open beaches, alkali flats and sand flats.

Nesting

Scrape in sand or gravel, often lined with objects to conceal.

North American Status

Listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Endangered or Threatened Species throughout range. USFWS has approved a recovery plan.

Threats

  • Extensive habitat loss from development and recreation -- vehicles often destroy nest eggs.
  • Over-hunting before federal protection was given.
