Roseate Tern

Distribution

Primarily a tropical species, breeding in Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. In North America, species has two distinct populations: (1) on coastal islands from Nova Scotia south to New York; and (2) in the Caribbean Sea, including the Florida Keys. Wintering areas remain largely a mystery.

Habitat

Rocky coastal islands with sandy or pebble beaches. Also on open grassy habitat.

Nesting

On rocks or sand, sometimes lined with grass, seaweed.

North American Status

Listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Endangered or Threatened Species throughout range. USFWS has approved a recovery plan.

Threats

  • Taking of eggs.
  • Human disturbance on nesting grounds.
  • Predation by rats
  • Netting of adults in Guyana.
