DistributionPrimarily a tropical species, breeding in Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. In North America, species has two distinct populations: (1) on coastal islands from Nova Scotia south to New York; and (2) in the Caribbean Sea, including the Florida Keys. Wintering areas remain largely a mystery. HabitatRocky coastal islands with sandy or pebble beaches. Also on open grassy habitat. NestingOn rocks or sand, sometimes lined with grass, seaweed.
