Florida south to Argentina.

Habitat

Swamps, marshes, mangroves.

Nesting

High in cypress in water. Loss platform of large sticks.

North American Status

Listed by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Endangered throughout range. USFWS has approved a recovery plan.

Threats

  • Primarily loss of suitable breeding and feeding habitat.
  • Human induced changes to natural water cycles and levels as a result of canals, levees and floodgates.
  • Minor threats include predation by raccoons.
