How to use Google Earth

Google Earth makes it possible to "fly" through space and zoom in on specific geographic areas and learn more about them.

This Google Earth application is packed with information to help guide green energy developement and minimize impacts on wildlife.

If you are not already familiar with Goole Earth, you will need to download it to your computer.

We have provided basic directions below to help you use the tool. Click on thumbnail image to view larger more detailed screen images.

Step 1: Go to Google Earth's Conservation Showroom and download the Google Earth File. If you do not already have Google Earth downloading is easy and automated here.

Step 2: To launch Audubon and NRDC's project directly, click here. Google Earth will then zoom in from space and present you this screen showing both organization's layers. The color codes in the NRDC layer show which lands are protected, while the Audubon legend reveals critical wildlife habitat areas. In addition to critical habitat areas, layers also show places identified as Core Areas for Greater Sage-Grouse by Governor Freudenthal.

To view Audubon IBAs: Audubon IBAs are marked with yellow stars. If you do not see them, be sure that box is clicked in the Places box to the left under "Audubon Priority Bird Areas and Responsible Wind Development". Then rollover the stars to view the IBA names, and click for more information on that particular area.

To fly in to a particular area: If you know the name of a particular IBA or park, type it in the "Fly To" text box at the top of the left column under "Search". Then hit enter and enjoy the ride as you fly quickly to that area for a close up.
