Stop Invasives: Making the Connection
STOP THE "ALIEN" ATTACK
Imagine aliens - taking the shape of a seemingly harmless plant or small animal -- coming into your community and taking over. They no longer face threats from their natural enemies, so they thrive -- ravaging native plants, birds and other wildlife, significantly altering the ecosystem. These aliens aren't from outer space - they're Earth-born and bred, and they're infesting more than 100 million acres of American landscape - that's equal to a strip of land two miles wide, stretching from coast to coast! AUDUBON CALLS ON STATES TO BAN THE SNAKEHEAD
Audubon has called upon the last 14 states that haven't yet done so, to ban possession and sale of the snakehead fish. Snakeheads are aggressive predators that scientists fear could decimate native fish populations and disrupt the natural ecological balance of rivers and lakes. In the past four months, eighteen northern snakehead fish -- including two females full of eggs -- have been found in the Potomac River of Maryland and Virginia, prompting concern that the species may have established a breeding population that could grow dramatically and impact the ecological balance of the river and its entire watershed.
