Historical & Political Importance
Honduras is one of the poorest and least developed countries in Central America. Most of the population of Honduras is caught in the crushing vice of plantation economics, with a small cabal of rich landowners at the top. The 1969 "Soccer War" between El Salvador and Honduras was formally blamed, by the Organization of American States, on overpopulation.
Habitat Under Pressure
Three-quarters of Honduras is composed of rugged hills and mountains. Lowlands are found only along the coasts and in major river valleys. Deforestation (due to both logging and land clearing for sustenance agriculture and export crops) is occurring at a rate of over 1,000 square miles a year, which, if continued, will turn the country into a treeless desert within the next 20 years. There are still untouched areas in Honduras, especially in the Mosquitia region where jaguars, armadillos, wild pigs, monkeys and alligators can be found along with toucans, herons, and kingfishers.
