Politics & People
Jamaica's economy is dependent on bauxite and tourism. Economic growth in Jamaica no longer keeps pace with population growth. Civil unrest in Jamaica is widespread and the nation continues to be a major source country of immigration to the U.S.

Habitat Under Pressure
Jamaica boasts an impressive diversity of terrain and vegetation, and parts of Jamaica's interior -- notably the Cockpit Country -- remain relatively unspoiled. Jamaica's coastal areas have been hammered by deforestation, pollution, and tourism, however, and reef damage is widespread. Land shortages have resulted in increased hillside sustenance farming and erosion. Jamaica continues to experience heavy rates of deforestation, and its coastal waters are polluted by industrial and mining waste, as well as sewage and oil spills.
