Mississippi River Song -- I Love It!

Why do I live by the River
with the skitters and flies
Why do I stand here and shiver
I’ll tell you the reason why

chorus
Cause I love it, I love it, I love it, I love the Mississippi – UH – River!

In the summer time we love her
cause we can jump in and get wet
We got eagles and herons and kingfishers
and bright Mississippi sunsets

We got Catfish and Walleyes
we got turtles and beavers too
We got sandpipers, ducks and pelicans
and bright Mississippi Moon

So much to learn about the River
it’s one big laboratory
Exploring and discovering
the River that supports you and me

You’re all students of the River
in a wild river classroom
You can question with wide-eyed wonder
you’ll be the caretaker soon

Let that River show you
let that River be your guide
Let the River lead you onward
Peace I know you will find

Five verses by Central Lee Elementary Students September 10, 2004
Catfish have those whiskers,
Pelicans have a real large mouth
The fish are gonna stay here for the winter
But the Pelicans will migrate south

The Turtles don’t move much movin
But the frogs can move pretty fast
We gotta take care of the river
We want the beauty of the river to last

The Peregrine flies in a real fast stoop
The Pelican’s beak is like a scoop
The birds and fish need the river to survive
Yes, the river is a quiver of life.

The mussels can take a grain of sand
And turn it into a pearl
Hey, this is the Mississippi, right?
Can we do this again next year?

The birds are happy along the river
They keep having this big river dream
Eagles and Herons and Kingfishers
Dreamin that the river is clean

One verse by Tara Brown and Kori Caswell of Hannibal, MO
Pulled into Missouri
And tied up at Mark Twain town
Looked at the bluffs and cave and all of those haunts
That Tom Sawyer used to hang around

For my long lost distant relative who tracked me down in Louisana, MO
Rode the Lilly Belle down to Missouri
Where the Louisana townfolk live
I was cruising through the grocery store
tracked down by a long lost relative

Five verses from City Academy and Fanning Middle School
Went down to the Lilly Belle
It felt like we were movin
Harry the Parrot was colorful
and the river made me feel like groovin.

Went down to the river
Was so windy I could hardly stand it
We saw Peregrine fly over the river
Fastest critter on the planet

Catfish have those whiskers
Sunfish have those gills
They swim in the river
Down to the confluence

Went down to the river
Watched a Vulture float in the breeze
Over the fields of goldenrod
As pretty as you please

Went down to the river
On a sunny and windy day
Hawk tried to get us to write this tune
Just couldn’t figure out what to say.

Five versus from the Confluence Academy
They call it one big river
I like the way the river sounds
Sure do like the Lilly Belle
I hope it comes back to town

There’s something about being at the confluence
It’s such good place to be
We learned about birds and fish in the river
And Harry whistled at me.

Went down to Big Muddy
I saw an Egret standing in the dirt
Sure do like the Lilly Belle
I just wish I could take home a shirt

Saw Caterpillar down by the river
He wiggled and he’s oragne and fuzzy
Heard some Cicadas in the trees
They were makin their own kinda buzzy

I saw an egret, he was fishing
And I was thinking, about the river
Wish there was a way to keep the river clean
Wish we could keep all this green
