Audubon Colorado, along with Environment Colorado and the Colorado Solar Energy Industry Association, invite you join us at a Rally to Repower America on Friday, February 6th. This event will send a clear message to the President-elect that we have heard his pledge to work with states and that Colorado stands ready to work with him.

The challenge is the economy. The solution is expanding Colorado’s new energy economy and making sure that we invest in a national one as well. Reviving the American dream starts by repowering America. We need to rebuild our economy on a sound foundation – one that puts people back to work, contributes to long-term prosperity, re­builds our communities, and protects our environment. Colorado’s new energy economy shows how sound that foundation is.

President-elect Obama has stated that, “We have the opportunity now to create jobs all across this country in all 50 states to repower America, to redesign how we use energy and think about how we are increasing efficiency to make our economy stronger, make us more safe, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and make us competitive for decades to come -- even as we save the planet."

This event will call for policies such as a green economic recovery program, a federal renewable energy standard, increased funding for increased energy efficiency standards as well as several state-level policies that assure that Colorado continues its leadership position.

Audubon, in collaboration with other major environmental groups like the National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, and Natural Resources Defense Council, hopes to collect hundreds of thousands of signatures on our petition to President-elect Obama to repower America. We need a new energy policy that will revive our economy, end our dependence on fossil fuels, and solve the climate crisis. Gov. Bill Ritter today praised the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission for its unanimous adoption of new rules that will provide greater natural resource protections while also allowing the state’s vital oil-and-gas industry to thrive. Click HERE to read the full press release.

Bill Brockner's life "was for the birds" — the birds he watched all his life — said a friend, Laura Mehmert of Evergreen. Brockner, who died Nov. 19, was a "birder" from the time he was 11 when he saw a mounted ivory-billed woodpecker in a Buffalo, N.Y., museum. His interest never waned.

A service for Brockner was heled at 11 a.m. Dec. 6 at the Evergreen Lake House.

Audubon Colorado recently received $35,000 from TogetherGreen Innovation Grants, a program funded by Toyota to connect people with nature. The grant will be used to fund an innovative TogetherSchools program in select Denver metro schools. Audubon Colorado will be partnering with Front Range EarthForce to engage middle school aged students in reducing energy use, while building the capacity and willingness of young people to be conservationists. The program will engage students in identifying potential sources of energy loss and inefficiencies at school and will guide them in developing and implementing strategies to address these issues. Audubon Colorado looks forward rolling-out this program in Denver and is excited about the opportunity to help students take a leadership role in energy conservation in their schools and homes and to develop in them a strengthened sense of environmental stewardship. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission recently approved new regulations to protect wildlife during energy development. These rules are particularly important because they protect two endangered but not federally listed birds - the Gunnison and the Greater Sage-Grouse. Denver’s Rocky Mountain News published an Op Ed from Brian Rutledge and Gary Graham, Executive Directors for Audubon’s state offices in Wyoming and Colorado, respectively, calling for an approach to sagebrush habitat management that balances wildlife and energy needs.
