Dave Pardoe, Chairman
One of the founders of the Audubon Society of Central Maryland and the Maryland Audubon Council. He has been involved with volunteer organizations for many years and served as an officer or board member of the Maryland Ornithological Society, North American Bluebird Society and Maryland Wildlife Federation. He was employed by the National Wildlife Federation for 15 years, and his final position there was shared management responsibility for the Conservation Program’s cluster of five departments, twenty-eight divisions, ten regional field offices and liaison with over 45 autonomous state affiliates. He is currently the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director on the Board of the National Audubon Society and serves as Chair of the Board’s States, Centers and Chapters Committee.
Lynn Dolnick, Ph.D., Vice Chairman
Associate Director, Exhibits and Outreach at the National Zoo. Has
served in several capacities at the National Zoo and was the founder and
director of New Opportunities in Animal Health Sciences, a program devoted to
advanced biomedical research to benefit wildlife and educational outreach to
improve science education. Former researcher in the field of molecular biology
and post-doctoral fellow at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill
Hill, London, England. Has served on the Coordinating Committee of the Boston
Women’s Fund and did volunteer curatorial work for the New England Aquarium
in Boston. Former board member of the National Audubon Society.
Hugh Simmons, Secretary
President of Chesapeake Audubon. Administrative Director of the Department of Anesthesia, Washington Hospital Center. Former Investment Representative with Edward Jones. Former Administrator of the Department of Anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Active in bird rehabilitation and a member of the DNR Captive Wildlife advisory committee.
Wayne Bell, Ph.D.
Director, Center for the Environment and Society at Washington College. Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies, Washington College. Former Vice President for External Relations at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. Ph.D. in Marine Microbiology from Harvard University and a BS in Zoology and Chemistry from the University of Miami Florida. Active in the Maryland Ornithological Society and serves on a wide variety of State and National boards.
Thom Burden
Comptroller, health management company. Former comptroller for the Providence Center. Served ten years as the first full-time executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Trust during a period when the Trust’s assets grew from $100,000 to $10 million. Active in the development and management of Maryland’s commemorative Chesapeake Bay license plate and the Bay and wildlife tax check-off. Began career in Maryland as a reporter with the News American and worked ten years in the press office of Governors Mandel and Lee.
Fred Fallon, Ph.D.
Past president of Prince George’s Audubon Society. Chairman of Land Management Committee of Md. Partners in Flight. Founding member of Audubon Council of Maryland. Past member of Belt Woods Advisory Committee, Belt Woods Task Force and Western Shore Conservancy. Research scientist at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Professional background in astronomy, geodesy, geophysics and statistics. Former positions at NOAA, Goddard Space Flight Center, and the University of South Florida.
Doug Gill, Ph.D
Professor, Department of Biology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Serves as Scientific Director of the Chester River Field Research Center at Chino Farms in Chestertown. Specialties include: ecology, tropical biology, conservation biology, population biology, evolutionary biology, fire ecology, ornithology and botany. Research interests include birds, protozoa, red-spotted newts, frogs and salamanders, parasites, plant genetics, Pink Lady-Slippers, orchids, fire, grassland restoration, and Grasshopper Sparrows.
Gary Heath
Assistant Superintendent, Maryland State Department of Education. Leader in environmental education in Maryland for the past ten years and active in national environmental education efforts. Developed Maryland’s environmental bylaw that requires environmental education in Maryland schools. Recipient of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Environmental Education Award for 2000. Board member of the Irvine Natural Science Center. Experienced birder.
Michael J. Kaspar, Ph.D.
President of the Board of Directors, The Audubon Society of the District of Columbia. Currently, Wildlife/Fisheries Biologist with the District of Columbia’s Fisheries and Wildlife Division of the Environmental Health Administration and Adjunct Instructor at Maryland Community College. Member of the District’s Environmental Education Consortium (EEC) and of the Coordinating Committee for the Kingman and Heritage Islands. Former Training Coordinator for the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) for the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) and the Council for Environmental Education (CEE). Program Manager for CEE’s national urban water education initiative, WET in the City, and former Director of two nature centers in Austin and Houston, Texas over 12 years. Professional background in science education, non-formal science education, and nature center management.
Karen Meadow
Fund raising consultant. In the field of fund raising since 1975 working for a variety of organizations including the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Baltimore Zoo and as executive director of the Radio Reading Service. Active in the Maryland Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, serving as Chapter President for three years and as a representative of the Chapter on the National governing body for five years.
Kyle Rambo
Nineteen years as wildlife biologist and natural resources manager at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Operated three MAPS stations for the last seven years. Southeast regional coordinator for Department of Defense Partners in Flight (PIF) program. Former member of Maryland PIF Steering Committee and first chair of the MD-PIF Habitat and Land Management Committee. Special interest in bird/aircraft strike hazard (BASH) reduction and management of grassland bird species in artificial grasslands.
William A. Richkus, Ph.D
Vice President and General Manager of Versar, an environmental consulting firm in Howard County. Nationally recognized expert in fisheries science and management. Presently manages a group of 50 scientists, working for local, state and federal agencies, primarily in ecological impact assessment, monitoring and resource management. Key writer of interstate management plans for coastal migratory fish species under the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. Ph.D., Oceanography from University of Rhode Island, M.S., Oceanography from University of California Scripps Institute of Oceanography, B.S., Zoology, University of Rhode Island. Affiliated with the American Fisheries Society, Potomac Chapter; American Institute of Biological Sciences; Chesapeake Bay Foundation and board member of Chesapeake Audubon Society and Pickering Creek Audubon Center. Author and co-author of numerous publications on the environment.
David R. Smith
A Central Maryland Audubon Society board member for the past twelve years, he served as president from 1996-1998. His association with Audubon grew out of childhood experiences in Southwest Florida where he attended local Audubon programs and visited the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. He began volunteering for Christmas Bird Counts in college and while completing his Masters of Science Degree in Zoology. He now works as an environmental consultant specializing in terrestrial and wetland ecology.
Lucy Spiegel
Lucy is the Vice President/Senior Executive Producer of Washington Public Affairs Programs at CNN Broadcasting. During her tenure, she helped develop Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, expanding the program to 3 hours and taking it on the road to cover breaking news stories and international stories from Moscow, China, Botswana and Germany. She is the Former Editorial Producer for the Larry King Live. She has worked at all three broadcast networks, including 20 years with CBS News during which she served as bureau chief in Beirut, Lebanon as well as producer for both the CBS Evening News and CBS This Morning. She is former board member of Pickering Creek Audubon Center where she directed a number of major fundraising events. She has a special interest in the Anacostia River.
Ernest J. Willoughby, Ph.D.
President of the Southern Maryland Audubon Society. A member of SMAS since 1973, having served as a member of the Board of Directors, Secretary, and Vice President intermittently during much of that time. Professor of Biology Emeritus at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he taught biology for 28 years. Continues to investigate various questions in ornithology, particularly the details of the molt cycles in passerine birds and how they are adapted to ecological conditions.
George Wilmot
Retired research chemist. Conservation Chair and Sanctuary Chair for Southern Maryland Audubon Society. Member of the State Water Quality Advisory Committee, the Lower Potomac Tributary Strategies Team and member of two Charles County Government Citizen Advisory Committees on sub-area planning and on Mattawoman Creek protection. Interested in water quality and stream protection, state and local land use issues and nesting bird population trends in Southern Maryland.
Richard R. Leader, Executive Director Audubon Maryland-DC
Directs activities of the National Audubon Society in Maryland and the District of Columbia serving the Society’s 15,000 members and five chapters. Former Director of the Pickering Creek Audubon Center. Former Assistant Director of the Chesapeake Bay Trust where he was active in the development and management of Maryland’s commemorative Chesapeake Bay license plate and the Bay and wildlife tax check-off. He holds an MA in public administration and a BA in political science from the University of Maryland.
