Audubon Maryland-DC Statement on Hunting
Audubon Maryland-DC supports legal and ethically conducted hunting on both a cultural and biological level. Since its founding, Audubon has recognized hunting’s long history of promoting deep appreciation for the outdoors and the bounty of nature. The hunting community has been one of this nation’s most significant contributors to land preservation and has produced some of our most informed land managers and wildlife biologists. Our National Wildlife Refuge System was created largely through the support of hunters and the Duck Stamp Program. Audubon accepts deer hunting, in particular, as the only practical solution to controlling the severe impact on our forests and fields by unnaturally high deer populations. Audubon consistently promotes the ecological view that healthy environments demonstrate a balance of animals and plants with their environment. That balance has been altered to the point that people need to intervene if our natural areas are to be preserved.
