Societies The Lucy & John James
Audubon Society provides significant annual financial support
to Audubon Maryland-DC. All donors who give at least $1,000
per year to Audubon Maryland-DC are members of the Society.
Created in 2002 by the National Audubon Society, the Lucy
Society serves multiple purposes; to cultivate and educate
the prospective donor, raise funds to support the mission
of Audubon Maryland-DC and reaffirm the interconnection between
the missions of the National Audubon Society and regional
Audubon offices.

Great Egret ($25,000 and
above)
The long, white plumes on the head
of the Great Egret were nearly this species’ downfall
when thousands were killed in the late nineteenth century
to provide adornments for ladies hats. Following the Audubon
Society’s first conservation campaign, Federal legislation
in 1905 saved the Great Egret and allowed its populations
to recover.
