Count birds around your home and enter your results through the Internet. Some 14,000 bird enthusiasts across North America reported over half a million birds they saw at their feeders, local parks, and natural areas for the first-ever count of its kind, the Great '98 Backyard Bird Count, February 20-21. Jays, chickadees, cardinals, finches--these citizen scientists identified and tallied them all, and they sent their sightings here, to BirdSource. Now you're invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Great Backyard Bird Count February 19-22, 1999!
Last February's concentrated effort created an immense snapshot of the distribution and population status of birds that winter throughout the continent. From Alaska to Florida, backyards "appeared" on state-of-the-art BirdSource maps displaying the whereabouts of America's winter birds and offering insight into the tremendous conservation potential the Great Backyard Bird Count will have as we soar into the new millennium. This year's reports will allow us to make comparisons to last year's findings. They will also add to a tremendous long-term database that will allow us to detect broad scale changes in bird populations. Please join us and citizen scientists across the continent as we count for the birds for the 2nd Annual Great Backyard Bird Count!
Sponsored by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society.

This conference is the third in a series of conferences on "Environmental Sustainability and Public Policy" sponsored by the Environmental Affairs Council and Environmental Studies Program at the University of Missouri- Columbia in cooperation with a number of other agencies and organizations. Because it also follows a previous conference at Southeast Missouri State University in 1992, "Towards a Vision for Missouri's Public Forests," the focus of this conference is on private forest lands. Approximately 85 percent of the state's 14 million acres of forests are private, the vast majority in tracts of less than 1,000 acres distributed among as many as 200,000 owners. To encourage landowner participation, the conference is being held in conjunction with the annual Missouri Tree Farm Conference March 5-6.
The purpose of the conference is to explore the intersections of science, economics, human behavior, and public policy with respect to Missouri's private forest lands. Speakers and panelists will assess the history and current status of Missouri's forests and the prospects for sustaining the full range of products, processes, and values they provide. Following a keynote address by Dr. Paul Ellefson of the University of Minnesota on policy initiatives in states throughout the nation, two half-day panels on Friday will consider emerging trends in demands for resources impinging on Missouri's private forest lands and the range of public policies that might be considered in Missouri to encourage sustainability.
The conference is intended for forest landowners, university faculty and students, forestry professionals, resource management agency officials, and interested citizens. The Missouri Audubon Council is one of the sponsors of this conference.

The International Botanical Congress (IBC) is a major convention of scientists from around the world to discuss new research in the plant sciences. The IBC is held only once every six years, and last met in North America in Seattle in 1969. These Congresses are particularly notable in that they bring together scientists not only from many countries, but also from many disciplines within the broad research field of plant science, including botany, mycology, plant ecology, horticulture, agriculture, and related fields. The increasing knowledge about plants—their history, growth, uses, interactions with other organisms, and roles in the ecosystem—is becoming progressively important to the stability and sustainability of the human endeavor and, indeed, of all life on Earth. For information go to the conference website: http://www.ibc99.org/.
