Help Wanted: Volunteer Discovery Leaders
Program Information: With about 650 acres of native tallgrass prairie, plus woods, streams, ponds, and original mid-19th century
wagon ruts from the Nebraska City-Fort Kearny Cutoff to the Oregon Trail, Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center is a diverse and engaging
outdoor classroom. Education opportunities are offered for schools (Lincoln public schools, surrounding community schools, et. al.) and
the general public. These hands-on, minds-on programs encourage all age groups in the development of observation skills, the use of the
scientific method to investigate topics and interests, and the development of problem-solving skills necessary in becoming
responsible conservationists.
Job Description: Energetic individuals with a passion for tallgrass prairie and who are interested in sharing that passion are needed
to facilitate educational experiences for people of all ages.
Job Type: Volunteer, seasonal fall and spring.
Availability: March through May, September and October, other times as needed. Completion of 15-hour facilitation training program that
includes shadowing experienced leaders required. Current First Aid/CPR certification desired but not necessary. Background check required.
Hours: Variable, usually between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday work week.
Qualifications:
* Eighteen years of age or older.
* Skilled in creating a safe, warm, and welcoming atmosphere to awaken children's curiosity for and enjoyment of nature.
* Able to interact well with children, teens, and adults.
* Willing to work outdoors in any weather as necessary.
* Interested in local natural history and the outdoor environment.
* Reliable, self-motivated, creative, and a team player.
* Willing to complete program facilitation training.
* Organized with attention to detail.
* Committed to the mission of Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center.
Physical Demands: This position requires the following physical activities: bending, kneeling, walking, talking, hearing, and
visual acuity. The work is performed primarily outdoors in a tallgrass prairie preserve and can require hiking up to two miles.
