Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center
Site Description:
Nearly 500 acres of native tallgrass prairie plus a wooded stream, wetlands, ponds, and bur oak/cottonwood woodlands make up this 640-acre Audubon Center located 20 minutes from Lincoln.
Ornithological Summary:
The Center is important as a migration stopover and breeding ground for grassland birds needing extensive tracts of native prairie. Nesting species include greater prairie-chicken; Henslow’s, field, and grasshopper sparrows; dickcissel; upland sandpiper; northern bobwhite; and bobolink. Sprague’s pipits are regular spring and fall migrants. Wooded areas support red-headed woodpeckers, Bell’s vireos, and yellow-billed cuckoos. Harris’s sparrows are common winter visitors.
