O NM518 Marshes
From the Taos Plaza go south on NM68 (Paseo del Pueblo Sur) 3.6 miles and turn left onto NM518 (road to Mora). Go for an additional 3.4 miles to the Carson National Forest Sign. Pot Creek is on the right in a wide area covered with willows. The canyon walls are covered with Piñon-Juniper. The willows line the creek for the next 1.8 miles. There are three paved pull outs, for fishing access (and birding), located along the road as well as unpaved wide shoulders. This was a grazing area that is being reclaimed by the forest service. The willows are thick so birding is best done from the pullouts. The brave can venture into the willows. At 1.7 miles from the Forest Service sign, the road tops a hill. Pull off and scan the meadows. A restroom is located at the pulloff 0.1 miles from the top of the hill. Birds of the area include Yellow Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, both Goldfinches, and Willow Flycatcher.

Continuing an addition 1.4 miles (all private land) brings you to Ft. Burgwin on the right (operated by Southern Methodist University), open from May through September. Permission must be obtained from the office to bird the grounds. This has the only tall trees in this area of the canyon.
