Los Luceros
If you went to the San Juan
Bridge, backtrack to NM 68 and turn north (left). If you skipped
the bridge, then continue north on NM 68. Approximately 4.2 miles
(just past the Oñate Memorial on your right) is a sign
and left turn to Los Luceros. This short road has speed bumps
so be careful. At the stop sign, jog to the entrance and drive
to the parking lot. This is a historical area and must be respected
as such. There are a variety of habitats here including an extensive
bosque with trails. A bird survey has been done by the Sangre
de Cristo Audubon Society and is available at the office. This
is one of the best places to observe Lewis's Woodpecker up close.
There is an extensive population on the property. Other notable
species include Dipper at the dam on the Rio Grande and Bald
Eagle along the river, both in winter. The number of species
are not high here, but these specialties can be seen.
Los Luceros is currently CLOSED. Special tour reservations can be made.
Call the office at (505) 852-3245 between 8:30 and 11:00 am and ask for Martin.
