F San Juan Bridge
The old single-lane bridge across the Rio Grande at San Juan Pueblo has been replaced, but the old structure remains and provides viewing of the river as well as access to the bosque south of the river. Head north out of Española on NM 68 toward Taos. Just past the Okay Casino take NM 74 on the left. Pull off the road just after turning off (next to the field with the water tank) and scan the field to the south across the road. In particular, pay attention to the higher ridges where there are prairie dog burrows. These are shared in the spring, summer, and fall by Burrowing Owl. Quail and thrashers have been seen in the brush on the north side of the road. Continue down NM 74, through the pueblo and toward the river. Just before the river, you will see a pull out area with a barrier and an old road to the left. Pull in and park (be sure to lock your vehicle). You can walk this road to the bridge. This is best birded in the spring, summer, and fall. The area northwest of the new bridge has a marsh with breeding Willow Flycatcher. Be prepared for mosquitoes.
