Climate Change Outreach Coordinator,
AUDUBON NEW MEXICO
Location: To be determined, but Santa Fe or Albuquerque preferred
This is a part-time position.
Because of the timeliness of this issue, this position begins in August 2008.

Audubon New Mexico’s
mission mirrors that of the National Audubon Society on a statewide basis: to
conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and
their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological
diversity. We aim to enhance the knowledge of New Mexico citizens to make
informed decisions about the protection of wildlife and to empower them to be
active stewards of the planet. This conservation mission is accomplished
through education, public policy and science.
Purpose of the Position:
The Climate Change
(“C-Change”) Outreach Coordinator – New Mexico will represent Audubon's Global
Warming Campaign in New Mexico. The C-Change Outreach Coordinator will identify,
recruit, and mobilize Audubon and other activists to work to pass federal and
state legislation to reduce global warming pollution and encourage energy
efficiency and renewable energy. More generally, the position entails grassroots
communication, training, and organizing on specific global warming issues.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Recruit, mobilize and
build capacity of grassroots and grasstops activists in the state to advance
positions and policies that reduce global warming pollution and increase
renewable energy and conservation at the federal and, secondarily, state levels.
Support and coordinate the activities of leading activists to improve their
knowledge, skills, and advocacy effectiveness with respect to federal
legislative campaigns.
Work with the state
office and National Audubon Society’s Washington, DC staff to organize community
awareness-building events, advocacy training workshops, and district visits to
congressional offices and other opinion leaders.
Build coalitions and
alliances with other New Mexico-based conservation organizations and coordinate
public education and other materials.
Conduct outreach to
other constituencies of interest, including labor, education, agriculture,
faith-based communities, and hunters and anglers.
Coordinate media events,
press releases and outreach, and other media strategies.
Document contacts in
online advocacy database, recruit new activists to E-Activist list, and ensure
necessary follow-up.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Participate in program planning on strategy for advocacy and media campaigns.
Write articles for newsletters, website updates, and listserves.
Report regularly to state office and National Audubon Society office on chapter activities and
interests as observed in the field.
RELATIONSHIPS
Internal:
Collaborate with the
Audubon New Mexico state office, Washington, DC Policy Office and Global Warming
Campaign Director, chapters, and education centers (as appropriate); and science
staff (as appropriate).
External:
Work with staff of
organizations that focus on global warming / energy / conservation issues and
resource agencies; media; donors; and the general public.
Equipment: (e.g.,
computer, copy machines, fax, telephone, etc.)
General computer
experience needed. Must be proficient in Outlook email application, and familiar
with spreadsheets, powerpoint, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS
(e.g., education, training, experience, licenses and skills)
Strong organizing,
outreach and coordinating skills. Experience working with the media. Excellent
oral and written communication skills. Experience with public speaking.
Willingness to travel routinely and on short notice. Demonstrated commitment to
natural resource protection issues. Knowledge of global warming issues a plus.
Responsible, self-motivated, organized team player.
PHYSICAL
REQUIREMENTS (e.g., lifting, reaching, climb, push/pull, etc.)
Some lifting of boxes
and moving equipment (50 lbs. max) and other light physical duties. Stamina
required for frequent travel, including considerable walking and standing for
events and presentations.
