5th GRADE ECOSYSTEMS EXPLORATIONS What is this program? v This four-day ecology program for 5th grades, or 4th/5th/6th combinations compares the ecology of your schoolyard to the ecology of the Audubon nature sanctuary. Your class will practice real scientific skills such as observation, data collection, classification, and reflection of their work through discussion, art, and writing. v All materials are in Spanish and English. Each student receives their own bilingual field journal that guides their exploration and provides teachers with an assessment tool. v Teachers receive a Teacher’s Guide containing extension activities, references, content information, and a copy of the student journal. v The program is conducted by our professional staff of environmental educators, and was developed using current National, New Mexico, and Santa Fe science standards. Each teacher also receives a copy of the standards that are met throughout the program. When are these programs? v Audubon educators work with one fifth-grade class per week. There are approximately 13 weeks available between September 2008 and May 2009. This is a first-come, first-served opportunity, so make sure to submit your application early! v Audubon educators visit your classroom from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Your class will visit the Audubon Center sanctuary from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. A stipend to cover expenses for your field trip bus is included in the program, although teachers are responsible for booking their own bus. How do you register and what are teachers responsible for? v Telephone registration begins Monday, September 8, 2008. Call the Education Department at 983-4609 and sign up for a specific week during the school year, Tuesday through Friday.
