7 NM338 South of Animas

 Southwest New Mexico

Private property. Bird from road only.

NM 338 is paved until Mile Marker (MM) 44, where it becomes a good gravel road. MM 38, located about 14 miles south of Animas, has been a reliable spot for Botteri’s Sparrow. Look in the tall sacaton grass on the east side of the road from July to August. The road can also produce Prairie Falcon, Curve-billed and Crissal Thrashers (R); Swainson’s Hawk, Lesser and Common Nighthawks, Bendire’s Thrasher, Cassin’s and Grasshopper Sparrows (S); and Ferruginous Hawk (W).
Habitat: Grassland and desert scrub. A cottonwood corridor crosses the road just south of MM 38.
Location: From Lordsburg, go 10 miles west on 1-10 to Exit 11 and drive south on NM 338.
