NM 9 is a paved road with very light traffic and offers good roadside birding. Watch for Prairie Falcon (R); White-tailed Kite (rare), Burrowing Owl, Lesser Nighthawk, Bendire’s Thrasher, Pyrrhuloxia (MIS); and a variety of grassland sparrows and, rarely, Short-eared Owl (W).
Habitat: Chihuahuan grassland and desert scrub.
Location: From Lordsburg, drive east on 1-10, exiting at Exit 49. Drive south on NM 146 to the village of Hachita. Take NM 9 toward Animas.
