 Clanton Canyon harbors Zone-tailed Hawk, Dusky- capped Flycatcher, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Hepatic Tanager and Scott’s Oriole (S); and Montezuma Quail, Whiskered Screech-Owl, Northern Pygmy-Owl and Arizona Woodpecker (R).
Habitat: Pinyon-juniper and oak woodland; sparse Apache pine stands.
Location: Go 10 miles west of Lordsburg on 1-10 to Exit 11. Turn south on NM 338. Pavement ends 38.4 miles south of Animas. Continue to MM 53 then bear right towards the National Forest. The road through the canyon is passable during most of the year. It continues over the pass 38 miles to Douglas, AZ.
Warning: Carry plenty of food and water in this area, have a full tank of gas, and a good spare tire and jack. It's a long walk out and you're out of cellular phone range in most of the area.
