The lake is a prime area for waterbirds and shorebirds, especially in fall, winter and spring. Locations for viewing the lake include North Monticello Point, Three Sisters and Rock Canyon Marina. Paseo del Rio Park is a migrant trap. Thousands of Western and Clark’s Grebes and unusual gulls (W). American White Pelican, several terns and shorebirds (M), depending upon water level.
Habitat: Open water; desert scrub; riparian growth.
Location: State Park Headquarters is 5 miles north of Truth or Consequences on Exit 83 off 1-25. Maps are available at Park Headquarters. The entrance to Paseo del Rio State Park is located on the west side of the road, just east of the bridge over the river on NM 51, 2 miles east of Truth or Consequences.
