Birding is best from May-September along the crest
hiking trail. Band-tailed Pigeon, Whip-poor-will, Violet-green Swallow,
Red-faced Warbler (5); Olive Warbler (M/S); and the rare Spotted Owl (R).
Habitat: Mixed coniferous forest.
Location:
From Silver City, take US 180 about 7 miles to Santa Clara. Turn left on NM
152 for about 28 miles. From 1-25 take the Hillsboro (Hwy 152) exit. Follow
west for 34 miles past Kingston to the pass. Parking areas provided.
