Along the road look for Gambel’s and Scaled Quail and
Greater Roadrunner (R). In the riparian zone, watch for Common Black-Hawk,
Peregrine Falcon, Bridled Titmouse, Bell’s Vireo, Lucy’s Warbler, Hooded and
Scott’s Orioles, and Vermilion, Brown- crested and Willow Flycatchers (5);
and Gila Woodpecker (R).
Habitat: Slow-moving river; rocky cliffs; ancient cottonwoods and
willows.
Location: Travel north of Lordsburg on US 70 for 2 miles and turn
right on NM 464. Travel 14.1 miles on NM 464 to a point 50 feet south of the
GrantlHidalgo County boundary sign. Turn left (west) on County Road A027
(Fuller Road), and drive 3.6 miles. Turn right (north) on County Road A024 (Caprock
Ranch Road). Continue another 4.9 miles to the BLM sign in Nichols Canyon
for Wilderness Study Area site. Continue 0.8 mile to the river and park in
the designated parking area.
