Look for Bendire's Thrasher atop shrubs on Forest Road 851 or NM 474 on your way to Red Rock. In the riparian area along the Gila River (the bridge crossing is the only spot as the remainder of the riparian area is privately owned), birds include: Gila Woodpecker, Abert's Towhee, Gambel's Quail, Greater Roadrunner, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Black Phoebe, Verdin, Cactus Wren, Curve-billed and Crissal Thrashers, Phainopepla, and Black-Throated Sparrow (R); and Common Black Hawk, White-winged Dove, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Cassin's Kingbird, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Vermilion Flycatcher, Bell's Vireo, Lucy's Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Blue Grosbeak, Bronzed Cowbird, Scott's Oriole, and Hooded Oriole (S). Zone-tailed Hawk (S) is sometimes seen in the area. To reach the NM Game & Fish area, cross at the bridge, turn right, and drive along the river. At 1.5 miles the NM Game & Fish headquarters is visible (an old house). Check with Game & Fish personnel (if present) to determine which parts of the area are open to the public. If staff are not present, birders may continue along the main dirt road for a mile in areas that are not posted. Do not leave the road, unless authorized to do so by with Game & Fish personnel. Do not disturb the bighorn sheep in the pens.

Location:
From Silver City, NM, follow directions to Forest Road 851 (see No. 19). After 24 miles, turn right on NM 464 for 3 miles. From Lordsburg follow US 70 north for 3 miles. Turn right (north) on NM 464 and proceed for 21 miles.
