The San Mateo Mountains lie northwest of Truth or Consequences in the Cibola NE. Springtime Canyon is situated at the southern end of the mountain range. Montezuma Quail, Acorn Woodpecker and Bridled Titmouse (R); Red-faced and Grace’s Warblers and Hepatic Tanager (S).
Habitat: Ponderosa pine and oak woodlands.
Location: From 1-25 take Exit 100. Go north on NM 1 (old US 85) for about 8.5 miles. Turn left (west) (sometimes sign is down) on the good dirt road for about 12.5 miles to the right (north) turn leading to Springtime Campground.
