Smart Growth While
the population of New York State has not increased significantly
over the past 30 years, and in some areas has actually decreased,
the land area covered by development has increased. This type
of “Sprawl” has resulted in great costs to the
taxpayers, and great costs to the environment of New York
State. The State has spent billions of dollars to place new
infrastructure on lands that were previously undeveloped,
instead of investing in our existing cities, towns and first
generation suburbs. The loss, degradation, and fragmentation
of open spaces, farmland, and habitats associated with these
poorly planned developments are the leading threat to many
bird species and Audubon
IBAs in New York.
To combat this sprawl, Audubon New York
continues to be a leading voice in the Smart Growth movement
in New York State. From hosting statewide conferences to leading
a Smart Growth Working Group, Audubon is committed to implementing
sound smart growth policies that empower local governments
to grow economically while preserving open space.
