Essential Elements of Smart Growth

Victor Dover, AICP, Dover, Kohl and Partners
Using images taken from the design and implementation of real-life projects, Victor Dover will discuss Smart Growth issues as they arise in the design and implementation of complete neighborhoods. Drawing from national examples of successful projects that seek to revitalize existing urban centers and retrofit suburbia, he will describe how communities are recreating a sense of place to reclaim their livability and economic prosperity.

Smart Growth Ordinances

John Nolon, Director, Land Use Law Center, Pace University School of Law
Until local governments adopt ordinances that ordain something other than sprawl, we won't have much growth that is smart. Professor John Nolon will highlight adopted and model ordinances that can help local communities achieve the type of smart growth presented by Victor Dover.

Many states are implementing smart growth programs that seek to protect open space, guide development and improve overall quality of life. A panel of diverse perspectives will discuss what's working and what's not and how New York State can benefit from these lessons.

Representatives from four counties discuss plans to foster intermunicipal efforts to preserve open space and farmland, guide development and build local capacity.
