2nd Annual Smart Growth Conference

Creating Quality Communities for the 21st Century

At the heart of the smart growth dialogue is the renewed interest in reinventing our urban centers and older suburbs as livable places of sustainable economic vitality and cultural enrichment, while protecting our environment and rural working landscapes. Residents and government officials alike are seeking new and progressive ways in which to implement smart growth policies that enhance the quality of our communities.

On May 4, 2000 over 350 people from across New York state attended National Audubon Society's 2nd Annual Smart Growth Conference at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, New York.

Highlights included Lieutenant Governor Mary O. Donohue, who described the work in progress of Governor Pataki's Quality Communities Task Force and nationally renowned smart growth planner, Victor Dover, who explained the importance of design in linking the private home to the community and the importance of mixed uses in community development.
