What You Can Do To Help The Kittatinny Ridge

EDUCATION & RECREATION

Get to know the Ridge by exploring a new spot. Take a hike, go on a spring wildflower walk or drive to a new spot for a scenic overlook or fall leaf color.

Go Hawk-watching. Eleven locations are listed on this website with information on each site and driving directions. Click here for that page.

Explore the Ridge through maps. Check out all the information available and make your own maps on the Kittatinny interactive mapping site.

HELP CONSERVE YOUR LOCAL PIECE OF THE RIDGE

Become a Kittatinny Caretaker! Help with local group efforts to restore habitat by planting native plants, and removing non-natives that are taking over our woodlands. Or, help a local hiking club maintain a piece of the Appalachian Trail or Tuscarora Trail. Check out the list of Kittatinny partner groups for local work projects.

Tread lightly! Use care when recreating on the Ridge - or in any wild area. ATVs, trail bikes, and horses can cause a lot of trail damage and erosion. Ride on properly marked trails only. Remember, only hikers are permitted on the Appalachian Trail!

Toolbox for landowners. There are many ways landowners can help protect their piece of the Ridge. See the Kittatinny Toolbox for a detailed list. Contact the Kittatinny Project director if you would be interested in attending a workshop or need help getting connected to local resources.

Forest Stewardship Training. If you are a landowner and want to learn more about managing your land for a healthy forest and healthy wildlife habitat, the Bureau of Forestry has training programs on Forest Stewardship. Check out the details at http://vip.cas.psu.edu/PAprogram.html.

CITIZEN SCIENCE

Count birds! Pick a favorite habitat area on the Ridge, near your community, or even your school or home. Add your list on-line to be part of the growing volunteer-gathered database of birds counted in North America. February is the Great Backyard Bird Count; December is the Christmas Bird Count; and eBird is year-round. Check it out! Also, join one of the many free local Audubon Chapter spring and fall bird walks to help you improve your bird identification skills -- click here for Pennsylvania list of Chapters.

Home improvement. Audubon At-Home is a program to help you make a healthier environment at home for wildlife and people. Create a bird-friendly back yard, and a people-friendly home for your family.

YOUR CIVIC DUTY

Attend local planning council and township or borough supervisor meetings. Decisions are made every year by your local elected officials that could impact the future of the natural resources in your community - including zoning, land use, new developments, parks, and watershed protection.

Notify your local officials about your concern for the ridge and your support of them to protect it. To obtain a list of your local officials, go to the PA DCED website. You can get a list of all officials for your township or borough: http://ctcoas01.state.pa.us/dced/MSS.DYN_LGO.show

Directions for conducting a database search:
1. Highlight County
2. Type in name of municipality in ALL CAPS, and type % at the end of the name
3. Highlight "All classes"
4. Highlight "All Officials"
5. Click on "Run report" button at top or bottom.
