 As South Texas has grown more developed and fragmented, Sabal Palm’s natural habitat has become critical to the numerous species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and other wildlife. The Sanctuary is an important link in the corridor of wildlife habitat that still exists in this region, which the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has classified as Tier I - High Priority. In 2003, Audubon began a long-term project to restore 150 acres of fallow agricultural field at the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. In previously restored sections of the Sanctuary, once-bare fields are now home to dense shrubs and 20-foot trees, and we are confident that we can replicate this success.
