Audubon Vermont has a number of
volunteer opportunities available throughout the year. Hardworking
members of the community help to keep Audubon Vermont running
smoothly. Volunteers do a wide variety of work ranging from
leading school groups, to trail maintenance, office administration,
or helping us to make our special events a success. Volunteer
opportunities change on a regular basis so please call us

Internship
Opportunities
Audubon Vermont proudly offers a
variety of environmental education and conservation internships
year-round. Internships are carried out at several locations
throughout the state, ranging from the Missisquoi National Wildlife
Refuge to the foothills of the Taconic and Green Mountains!
Our internships are designed to offer opportunities for people
to work in the environmental field as educators and researchers.
Internships are also available in the areas of Development and
Public Policy. Professional Audubon staff work closely with
interns to insure a challenging and rewarding experience. College
students are able to fulfill academic requirements while gaining

CONSERVATION EDUCATION INTERN
Location: Green Mountain Audubon Center (GMAC) in Huntington.
The GMAC is conveniently located between Burlington and Montpelier.
Description: The GMAC in Huntington, Vermont provides
undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to gain
practical experience teaching students from preschool through
middle school. The GMAC's 255 acres is an ideal outdoor classroom
with forests, ponds, meadows and the Huntington River all within
walking distance. Interns work for a semester for college credit
(during the fall or spring) with professional Teacher/Naturalists
to develop outdoor teaching skills and to incorporate their
knowledge of the natural history and conservation-related issues
of Vermont into lesson plans and activities for young students.
Interns will focus on gaining the skills necessary to lead small
groups of students through our seasonally based, conservation
education programs as well as gaining experience developing
lesson plans for an outdoor setting. Audubon Vermont's conservation
education internship is a challenging, highly rewarding experience
for anyone considering a career in environmental or conservation
education.
Responsibilities:
- Write personal goals and objectives for your internship.
- Attend a required training session.
- Read all required materials prior to the first program
day.
- Work with preschool, elementary, and middle school students
in an outdoor setting.
- Complete self-evaluations on a weekly basis to document
your progress.
- Meet with your mentor each time you visit the GMAC as
well as for a mid and final evaluation.
- Develop a program lesson plan or a Discovery Room display/project
to be left at Audubon.
- Assist education staff with trail maintenance, public
relations, off-site events and other GMAC operations as
needed.
- Write an evaluation of the internship experience.
- Must have reliable transportation to the GMAC.
Time Commitment: Interns must be able to commit to 2
or 3 days per week from 8am to 12pm or as needed to complete
course work hours. During January and February, interns must
be available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings when school programs
are in session. From March to June, school programs are in session
Tuesday - Friday mornings. Mentor meetings will be set-up to
accommodate both the mentor and intern's schedule.

POSITION TITLE: SUMMER DAY CAMP INTERN
Location: Audubon Vermont’s, Green Mountain
Audubon Center in Huntington.
Description: The Green Mountain Audubon Center in
Huntington provides college students or recent graduates with
an opportunity to gain practical experience working in environmental
education. Interns may choose to work 25 hours a week with
our Preschool Nature Camp or 40 hours a week with our Ecology
Day Camp. Interns work closely with children ages 4-5 or 6-12
for 8 weeks exploring the meadows, ponds and forests at the
Audubon Center. Interns gain first hand experience teaching,
developing curriculum and working as part of a dynamic education
team. Audubon challenges interns to build their interpretive
and people skills while encouraging them to further their
studies in the natural history of Vermont.
Commitment:
- June 11, 2008 – August 18, 2008 (9 weeks and 4 days).
- Ecology Day Camp daily work hours are from 8:00 am to
4:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
There is one overnight camping trip and one week when
staff hours are from 2:00 pm - 9:30 pm.
- Preschool Nature Camp’s daily work hours are from
8:00am to 1:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
Responsibilities:
- Attend camp training led by professional Audubon Teacher/Naturalists.
- Assist Instructors in providing a fun, educational experience
for campers.
- Work with children ages 4 and 5 (Preschool Camp) or children
ages 6-12 (Ecology Camp).
- Learn to develop age appropriate curriculum and implement
daily lesson plans.
- Fulfill academic requirements as well as Audubon’s
work requirements to receive credit at your school.
- Complete self-evaluations throughout the summer and write
a final evaluation of your experience by August 22.
Qualifications:
- Must be a college student working to receive credit in
your area of study.
- Strong love for the outdoors and interest in the natural
history of Vermont.
- Experience working with children is preferred.
- Majoring in education, environmental studies, natural
resources or like field.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- First Aid and CPR certification is required by June 23.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Must be able to commit to the entire period of work.
