Staff Nina
Carter, Executive Director
In January 2005 Nina assumed Audubon Washington’s
top position after serving as policy director since November
2001. Her background includes more than two decades in public
policy and environmental issues for the Washington departments
of Fish and Wildlife, Ecology, Office of Marine Safety; and
State Parks. She was an Olympia City councilwoman and adjunct
professor in Environmental Studies at The Evergreen State
College. She has handled the issues of growth management,
oil spill prevention, water resources, salmon recovery, forests,
and agriculture, and worked extensively with non-profit organizations,
industries, and state agencies. She received a BA in economics
and labor studies, and a Master’s degree in public administration
from The Evergreen State College. Nina’s family originally
came to Whidbey Island, Washington in 1852, but she has lived
in Europe, North Africa and Japan. She and her husband, Dr.
Thomas Rainey, live in Olympia. Her favorite bird is the Cedar
Waxwing, and favorite pastimes are walking, traveling, architecture,
history, and – of course – bird watching.
