Science Goal in Washington

Clark’s Nutcracker by H. Hilscher
The goal of Audubon Washington’s science program is to focus our resources on the most vulnerable bird species. We do this by communicating the state of the birds to citizens and legislators, by presenting solutions to guard against further declines, and by stimulating legislative action to affect public policy.

Audubon Washington gathers scientific information from professional and citizen scientists through a number of established Audubon programs, from the century-old Christmas Bird Count (just the CBC; not all counts and records) to the more recently established Important Bird Areas Program. Data is rigorously analyzed, interpreted, shared with the public, and informs all our programs.

Audubon’s scientists are currently working to document many North American birds wintering farther north due to warmer than average winters. We are now investigating evidence that global climate change is already having a dramatic effect on Washington bird populations.
