Lazuli Bunting
Indian Paintbrush and Lupines in a mountain meadow

THE PROGRAM

Join regional biologists and naturalists in exploring the beautiful and archaeologically rich Big Horn Basin of Wyoming Each daily session will involve an expert-guided interpretive hike through the Tensleep Nature Preserve. Topics will center on the biodiversity of the region and how organisms thrive in the mountains. Specific hikes will expose you to local and migrating birds, mammal tracks and signs, insects, and a variety of wildlife.

Field sessions emphasize hands-on activities that are engaging from start to finish. We will explore the Preserve's plant communities including species from meadows, forests, and woodlands. You will:

  • learn how to identify many mountain plants and their uses
  • hike through deep canyons, sagebrush steppes, and mountain meadows
  • explore a stream community
  • examine springs in limestone formations
  • discover how nature has sculpted this amazing place

In your free time you might stroll among douglas firs, ponderosa pines, junipers and aspens looking and listening for mountain blue birds and green-tailed towhees; photograph, sketch, and identify wildflowers against a panorama of cliffs, trees, and magnificent sunsets over the Big Horn Basin; or relax under the glorious night sky, blazing with stars.

Evening programs will feature local musicians, cowboy poets, and time to reflect on the day's activities and sights. Fishing for the elusive rainbow and brook trout is permitted in local waters with purchase of a Wyoming fishing license.

THE FACILITIES

The Tensleep Preserve's lodge is a spacious, functional log structure which serves as the main meeting room and dining area. It features a massive stone fireplace constructed with layers of local rock depicting each geologic era in order. Adjoining the meeting room are: a kitchen, classroom, reading alcove, small store, handicapped-accessible bathroom, and covered dining deck featuring spectacular views. The bathhouse, bathroom, and lab are located downstairs, accessible from the Tent Camp.

The Tent Camp comfortably accommodates 20 people in two-person platform tents with beds. From the Tent Camp guests can access several miles of marked trails and a short drive takes you to the heart of the Preserve -Canyon Creek -for additional hiking and fishing.
