Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area: Spring Open House

May 17, 2024 - Pinconning, MI

No RSVP required

Each spring, Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area (SWA), located along the globally recognized Audubon Important Bird Area of Saginaw Bay, hosts over 250 bird species! Learn more about this birding hotspot at a Spring Open House, presented by Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Drive to different observation points, bring your own kayak or canoe to paddle within the marsh units or along Saginaw Bay, or walk along the dike system. Drop-in to the DNR Field Office at 1570 Tower Beach Road, Pinconning, MI 48650 any time between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Friday, May 17 for additional information or advice on where to explore.

Despite its small size, tens of thousands of ducks, swans, geese, wading birds, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds migrate through Nayanquing Point SWA each spring, making it one of Michigan’s premier Wetland Wonders. This 1,505 acre of strictly managed waterfowl habitat is an important area for migratory birds and wetland wildlife species and provides high quality, diverse habitat for a variety of recreational opportunities. The viewing tower located at the end of Kitchen Road provides opportunities to witness numerous bird species throughout the migration seasons.

Restrooms and light snacks will be provided at the DNR Field Office, and just a half hour north, you can also join in on the fun at Tawas Point Migration Days if you want to make a day trip out of your visit.

Important notes: Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes as the dikes are unpaved with uneven ground. For kayakers and canoers, please be aware that the paddling launch sites are rustic. The viewing tower is ADA accessible, but the parking lot is graveled.

This event is presented in partnership with MI Birds, a public outreach and education program created by Audubon Great Lakes and the Michigan DNR. MI Birds aims to deepen all Michiganders’ engagement in the understanding, care and stewardship of public lands that are important for birds and local communities.
