Strawberry Plains Audubon Center

Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, located near Holly Springs, Mississippi, boasts 2,600 acres of magnificent forests, grasslands and native plant gardens. The center was described as an "outdoor lover's paradise" by The Tupelo Daily Journal. A full year-round schedule of nature walks, education programs for both school children and adults, workshops and other special events makes the center a rewarding destination for everyone in the family. The Center also showcases over 200 species of birds and 15 miles of trails allowing guests to explore and see a host of amphibians, reptiles and mammals as well. When in season, the butterflies are in great abundance. Experience all these wildlife wonders and restored habitats while taking a step back in time on this Civil War era cotton plantation complete with antebellum home, cemeteries and sharecropper houses.

A favorite annual event is the Annual Hummingbird Festival in September. Thousands of migrating Ruby-throated Hummingbirds stop at Strawberry Plains to refuel, enroute from their breeding grounds as far north as Canada to their winter homes in Mexico and Central America. Festival-goers watch as the tiny birds are banded; banding enables scientists to learn more about the birds’ remarkable migration, which includes a 500-mile non-stop flight over the Gulf of Mexico. Last year, the festival hosted 8,000 visitors, who enjoyed strolling the grounds, taking part in wildlife and conservation workshops, learning how to attract hummingbirds to their own yards, and simply viewing hundreds of these tiny titans feeding on the native plants that surround the Center’s historic Davis House.
